Dentelle de Calais-Caudry, the art of weaving dreams

by Lluís Masdevall

In Calais and Caudry to speak of blonde is to speak of an ancient, artisan, delicate, artistic, sensual, evocative and inspiring craft of haute couture creators, of pieces that have captivated women and men alike, and that always it shows a distinction, a little luxury, a joy of looking and admiring, the detail and delicacy of a job well done. The soul of the best blonde still resides today, more than 200 years later, in two cities in the North of France: Calais and Caudry are synonymous with Dentelle.

On the initiative of the Fédération Française des Dentelles and the dentelliers of Calais-Caudry, and under the direction of the good work of Lienart Editions de Paris, and with the support of the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller it has been a pleasure to participate in the board of graphic production, printing, and binding of this magnificent project of which we explain each technical detail and some photography resources that we think should be highlighted because it has helped to achieve a very high level of excellence.

Technical details of the graphic production to highlight

The photomechanics and retouching of all the images have been carried out in the company of our group, Les Caméléons Artisans de l’Image de Paris. They have used the specific profiles FOGRA 39L adapted to the UV LED technology of our Speedmaster Heidelberg UV LED of 8 colors, in all the images.

The blonde is a delicate and very subtle fabric, and we were afraid that printing in conventional plots would cause moiré in some images, so it was decided to use a stochastic plot of 20 microns to avoid this problem.

Painted edges in blue aniline. This technique brings creative added value to the project. The contrast with the white of the paper and the delicacy of the cover had to be combined with a powerful visual impact.

The cover of both, the book and the box, have combined a dry relief (debossing) accompanied by a Kurz Colorit blue hot foil.

Box with window for the placement of a blonde specifically made by each of the eight Dentelliers who have participated in the project. This makes each case a unique piece.
